Every third week of June, we are watching the live stream of
Glastonbury Festival, the greatest music festival in the world. As
you should know by now, BBC is offering the most spectacular free
live stream of the event, broadcasting almost every act performing on
five stages. These stages are: Pyramid (main stage), Other, West
Holts, Park – and renamed Woodsies stage, which was previously
known as John Peel before the sexual misconduct allegations against
the radio host were publicly revealed. There will be also a special
coverage on BBC TV and radio channels – you can find them in the
broadcaster’s press release, published yesterday
https://www.bbc.com/mediacentre/articles/2023/glastonbury-on-bbc-tv-iplayer-radio-bbc-sounds
.
It is possible that
the live stream on the smaller stages won’t actually include every
single act, and it might start a little later. So I wouldn’t
necessarily count on all of them being available to watch live. Just
a word of caution after being disappointed last year.
I really hope that
the performance of the composer Max Richter will be streamed though!
Richter is obviously best known for his scores for The Leftovers,
Taboo, Ad Astra, but he also collaborated with Yo-Yo Ma and Tilda
Swinton - and his composition On The Nature Of Daylight was also,
obviously, prominently featured in Shutter Island and Arrival.
The Comet Is Coming
stream will be broadcast on Friday and it’s a great recommendation
for every fan of psychedelia and a proof that jazz isn’t really
boring – my memories from their Off set are still among my greatest
concert experiences.
R&B and soul
fans can’t miss three sets in particular – there are very few
people who don’t know that Thundercat set is a must see, but I also
have to remind you about the greatness of Say She She – our
winners of last year’s Mavoy Music Award for best new group. The
trio would probably perform their recent singles, and when it comes
to the Cat – well, he released a new song too and time will tell if
the album follows. Finally, we have a rare performance of legendary
disco and funk singer Candi Staton on Saturday, similarly to jazz
master Herbie Hancock last year. This one is certainly something you
have to experience.
But indie music is
also in strong position on Glastonbury this year, especially on
Sunday, when you can watch our adored singer-songwriter Weyes Blood
and also two of our favourite bands – Japanese Breakfast and The
War On Drugs. There’s a concert of one of the most celebrated
shoegaze bands, Slowdive, ahead of the new album. Also on that day,
special show from the winners of our last year’s award for Best
Album – Charlotte Adigery and Bolis Pupul. Meanwhile on Friday, we
have another one of our faves and proud follower of Mavoy Music –
Warpaint!
Similarly to last
year’s post, I categorize recommended performances by genre –
even it’s not always the easiest task. The full schedule is available here
If you cannot watch
live, all streamed performances will be available on demand for 30
days, starting the morning after the specific set. All times in CET.
PS To watch anything
on iPlayer outside United Kingdom, you need to obtain an English IP
address, using proxy/VPN/SmartDNS etc. BBC radio coverage is
available to everyone.
