Wciąż nie jestem zadowolony z dokonań Jamesa Blake'a i rzadko przypominają mi jego wczesne elektroniczne utwory. Gdy jednak usłyszałem dziś rano, najnowsze nagranie Steve'a Spaceka - który pomimo długiej kariery jakoś jeszcze się u nas nie pojawił, moją pierwszą myślą był właśnie James, ten "stary" James. Londyński projekt Deary odkryłem późno, bo dopiero w ostatnich tygodniach 2023 r, kiedy sprawdziłem ich listopadową EP, zatytułowaną po prostu Deary. Wydawany przez Sonic Cathedral duet, w którego skład wchodzą Ben i Dottie (podobieństwo z artystką z USA przypadkowe) połączyła miłość do twórczości Elizabeth Fraser. Do EP odsyłam gorąco, teraz zespół połączył siły z innym brytyjską grupą, Whitelands. Dzisiaj, niejako w odpowiedzi, angielski songwriter wydał kolejne nagranie z albumu Springs Eternal, którego premiera jest przewidziany na 16 luty. "Now in Motion to dźwięk kostek domino, które zaczynają się przewracać. Reakcja łańcuchowa została wprowadzona w ruch, nie można jej odwrócić. Jedna rzecz doprowadziła do drugiej i teraz jesteś w sytuacji po kolana. To jeden z głównych motywów przewodnich tego albumu" - wyjaśnia artysta.

We're finishing a look back at 2023 today with the final charts and also our incredible Mavoy Music Awards.
As always, some of our picks here might be surprising, other perhaps not so much. Kelly Lee Owens and Beach House's releases dominated the EP chart as two releases that were quite heavy in our rotation this year. If you followed me closely, you knew what would win in the compilation chart, as well. But, despite winning a few other categories this year, Nabihah Iqbal didn't win our music video chart, at last minute losing to the video that wasn't even officially released by the artist. I love the fan made video channel Guardi and its creator published a special video for Cleo Sol's song using, with the edited footage of the civil rights movement, Martin Luther King Jr. with Malcolm X, quite a few clips of Aretha Franklin, it's remarkable. I think Cleo herself would ADORE it.
I like to let loose with the reissue chart, this year is no different, and #1 is definitely surprising. It makes you question what makes a great reissue release. All the bonus features, great packaging are important, and most records at the top would follow this direction. But personally, I think the most important aspect is simply... music discovery itself. So my #1 is Djivan Gasparyan, a simple vinyl reissue of two albums without any bonus tracks. But, not really familiar with his name before (although I obviously heard him on various soundtracks) - I became really FASCINATED with Gasparyan. His music is magical. It has this pure atmosphere of sadness, bitterness, grief, bleakness. I think it'd fit something like Bela Tarr's picture, or maybe even Tarkovsky or Bergman. While he's no longer with us - his music remains with us. Like with Ryuichi Sakamoto, my even bigger discovery of the year. I don't know as much about Gasparyan but I'll continue digging.
Our awards speak for themselves, I think. We had a weak year for rap, so there's a vacat in this category. Maybe in 12 months we'll have new albums from Run The Jewels, clipping... or maybe Little Simz will win again. For lyrics, I considered Romy's Loveher, but I went with less mainstream pick. Label Of The Year, I knew it would be Ninja Tune for quite some time - Nabihah, Young Fathers, George Riley, Little Dragon. Next year, we might be more adventurous and give an award to reissue label.
