MAVOY MUSIC CHARTS - TOP 300 OF ALBUMS

(The post will be updated)

#10 SPARKS - A STEADY DRIP, DRIP, DRIP

Next year, we will be able to finally see the Sparks documentary from a marvellous director Edgar Wright, so the cult band will be properly introduced to a larger audience. Appriopiately, the Mael brothers have just released one of their best albums. Their undeniable sense of humour and fantastic hooks were a great remedy to anguish of 2020.

#9 CLEO SOL - ROSE IN THE DARK

I am just really impressed that despite releasing two brilliant records with SAULT this year, Cleo has ALSO released a great, more acoustic solo release. Three albums in TOP 10 - it's an incredible achievement. I didn't even realize at first she's the lead vocalist of acclaimed project. This albums deserves just as much attention.

#8 TAME IMPALA - THE SLOW RUSH

Fans of the original psych sound of Tame Impala often complain about new poppy sensibilities of Kevin Parker and his interest in hip-hop (he only just declared that Cardi B's "WAP" is a "perfect song" - well, let's agree to disagree). While I listened to the project back in Lonerism days, and I don't think the new record is better than Lonerism or Currents - it's still more catchy than any pop released on the radio in 2020. And On Track seems inspiring...

#7 JARV IS... - BEYOND THE PALE

In the interviews promoting this LP, Jarvis talked a lot about missing live performances and how they influenced the creation of the album. I'm glad to be introduced to Jarv Is... via their festival performance. I already knew House Music All Night Long is a banger before official release, but BTP provided more eccentric lyrics from Mr. Cocker, fantastic addition to his discography.

#6 WILLIAM BASINSKI - LAMENTATIONS

I am not huge expert of William Basinski's discography. I haven't even heard The Disfiguration Loops in full (yet). But while it's probably not favourite record of this strange year, it's most definitive. Beginning with the title, finishing with the song literally titled "Please, This Shit Has To Stop". That's a cry of an album if there's one.

#5 SAULT - UNTITLED (BLACK IS) / UNTITLED (RISE)

The conversation around civil rights and systematic racism grew this year after the tragic killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmad Arbeury. Millions of people took place in massive protests around the world. There were quite a few great protest albums (especially hip-hop ones) but my personal favourite is the one from this great UK project that also released equally brilliant second record later this year.

#4 YUMI ZOUMA - TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES

I already loved their previous albums and I almost didn't believe they could top Willowback, yet somehow this New Zealand band released possibly the best pop album of the year. Lead by summer warmer Col For A Second, Yumi Zouma absolutely enchanted me with new songs, which were also released in the fall in their alternative versions.

#3 KELLY LEE OWENS - INNER SONG

Just like Cocker, Kelly delayed her album noticeably - and unlike him she didn't push the release back to earlier date. We had to wait almost four more months - but the final effect was incredible. The album, which was very accordingly to the times premiered on... Zoom, is one of my favourite club releases of recent years -being a great preview of live future for KLO.

#2 BEN SALISBURY, GEOFF BARROW & THE INSECTS - DEVS

We have been already sold when we first heard that Sonoya Mizuno will star in new Alex Garland's television project. The series, also featuring great performances from Nick Offerman and Stewart Henderson was a real hit - amazing cinematography, superb production design, great writing (still very rare in TV  hard sci-fi), but the most important for this chart would be moody score provided by Garland regulars - Salisbury and Barrow - joined by the group The Insects.

#1 JESSIE WARE - WHAT'S YOUR PLEASURE?

Well, it's Jessie Ware, and if you're cautious of my positive opinions of her music, just listen to the album. I would dare to say it's her best record since Devotion though. I was a little exhausted with these pop-acoustic tunes (not that I'm giving myself a credit, but she KNEW that I am ;) ) - so this is a very welcome surprise, not only no acoustic stuff, almost no ballads as well (and we'd probably not mind one or two tbh). Move to a bigger label unexpectedly resulted in a risky, but highely original effort that is one of Jessica's biggest successes.
